In Conversation with the Right Honourable Paul Martin: Advancing reconciliation with education

Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business is proud to host a special evening of conversation with former Prime Minister the Right Honourable Paul Martin on how education sets the path forward in the current time of reconciliation and what we can achieve by working and investing in each other. Paul Martin initiated the ground breaking Kelowna Accord between the Federal, Provincial, Territorial governments and the First Nations, Inuit and Métis leadership. He is also the founder of the Martin Family Initiative, a non-profit organization focused on supporting the education, health, and wellbeing of Indigenous youth and their communities. Joy Cramer, SFU Beedie’s Director of Indigenous Programs, will facilitate the discussion.

The Right Honourable Paul Martin was Prime Minister of Canada (2003-2006) and Minister of Finance (1993 to 2002).

As Minister of Finance, he erased Canada’s deficit, recorded five budget surpluses and set Canada’s debt ratio on a steady downward track. He cofounded the Finance Ministers' G-20.

Among his accomplishments as Prime Minister, Mr. Martin introduced a ten-year plan to improve healthcare and wait times; signed agreements with provinces and territories for the first national early learning and childcare program and created a new financial deal for Canada’s municipalities.

Mr. Martin's first act as Prime Minister was to put in motion the process that led to the 2006 Kelowna Accord, a historic agreement with Indigenous people (First Nations, Métis and Inuit), booking funding of five billion dollars for the first five years to eliminate the funding gaps in education, healthcare and housing for Indigenous Canadians.
